RFID implants help keep track of animals, merchandise and humans.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) microchips or tags track merchandise and animals using radio signals. RFID tags can reach sizes smaller than a grain of sand and run entirely on power in radio waves.

  1. Functions

    • Retailers rely on RFID microchips to control inventory and prevent theft. Scientists use them to study animals in the wild and monitor endangered species. The information RFID tags transmit resembles the data contained in a bar code. According to the Fox News website, the Mexican government has used RFID implants to identify the staff of the attorney general's office in Mexico City.

    Features

    • According to the CNET, the smallest RFID tag on record measures 550 by 550 microns. Depending on the tag's application, its antenna measures between .5 inches long and 4 square inches.

    Considerations

    • The FDA has approved RFID tags for use in humans and animals. According to Fox News, however, the American Civil Liberties Union worries about privacy violations resulting from human RFID implantation.
