Wireless Internet Vs. DSL

DSL and wireless internet both offer an always on connection.

There are a multitude of options to choose from when selecting an Internet connection. DSL, or digital subscriber line, and wireless Internet both offer an always on connection. Speed, cost and availability should be considered when selecting an Internet connection.

  1. Access

    • A DSL connection transmits information through an existing phone line. Wireless Internet uses radio frequencies to send and receive data.

    Speed

    • The speed of a DSL connection is anywhere from 1.5 to 9 Mbps (megabits per second) for download and 1.6 to 640 Kbps (kilobits per second) for upload. Wireless Internet connection speeds may reach 54 Mbps, but vary depending on the distance from the source.

    Hardware

    • DSL uses a USB or ethernet modem to connect the computer to the phone line. A filter is installed to prevent interference from the phone line. Wireless signals are received by the computer using a wireless adapter or a network card.

    Cost and Availability

    • Monthly service for DSL ranges from $20 to $45, while wireless may be slightly more expensive with standard monthly costs from $39 to $60. Availability of both DSL and wireless may be limited by location.

    Security

    • Wireless networks provide a less secure connection than broadband, or DSL. Firewalls and enhanced computer security settings should be uitlized with both wireless and wired connections.
