A dental laboratory technician creates dental equipment for patients.

Dental lab training prepares people to work behind the scenes in dental care. Few dental laboratory technicians actually have patient contact. These highly skilled workers follow specific instructions to craft crowns, dentures, bridges and other devices for the mouth.

  1. Requirements

    • According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, few educational or training requirements exist to becoming a dental laboratory technician. However, many employers seek applicants with a high school diploma.

    Training

    • According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, most dental laboratory technicians receive on-the-job training. Dental laboratory technicians can begin as helpers and gradually gain more responsibilities and new skills over time. For example, technicians may start out pouring plaster onto an impression. Eventually, dental technicians may move up to complex work, such as creating porcelain bridges.

    Programs

    • According to College Board, formal training is also available in dental laboratory technology programs. Such training typically leads to certification or an associate degree. Typical courses include ceramic techniques, crown and bridge, dental anatomy, dental lab practice, dental materials, occlusion, orthodontics and partial and complete dentures.
