Mobile phone ringtones have evolved considerably in the past few years. From the original monophonic ringtones, they have developed to the point of being able to play music or customized tones. Users must know which file format is accepted on their phones. The file extension--the letters following the dot after a file's name--tells us what its format is.

The MP3 extension (.mp3) signifies that the file is a compressed audio and music file. This is the most popular style for music ringtones, and is accepted on many phones.
