What Is the File Extension for Ringtone Files?

What Is the File Extension for Ringtone Files? thumbnail
Mobile phone ringtones have a number of different file extensions.

Mobile phone ringtones have evolved considerably in the past few years. From the original monophonic ringtones, they have developed to the point of being able to play music or customized tones. Users must know which file format is accepted on their phones. The file extension--the letters following the dot after a file's name--tells us what its format is.

  1. MP3

    • The MP3 extension (.mp3) signifies that the file is a compressed audio and music file. This is the most popular style for music ringtones, and is accepted on many phones.

    M4A

    • MPEG-4 compressed audio files are shown by the extension .m4a. These are higher-quality audio ringtones created from music or sound files. They are predominantly used on newer models.

    M4R

    • The M4R file (.m4r) is the custom MPEG-4 file type for the Apple iPhone ringtones. Other ringtone file types do not work on the iPhone.

    MID

    • MIDI polyphonic ringtones are signified by the .mid file extension. These ringtones can be used on most modern phones and consist of a number of sounds playing at the same time to make up a tune.

    Custom Phone Tones

    • Certain manufactures such as Nokia (.nokia), Sagem (.sag), and Sony Ericsson (.emy) have their own ringtone file extensions, in addition to other file extensions that work on their handsets.
