Deer Hunting in Marathon, Texas

Marathon attracts hunters to this desert area of west Texas.

Marathon Texas is a small town on Highway 90 about 50 miles north of Big Bend National Park. The west Texas area attracts a lot of hunters seeking mule deer in the semi-desert area.

Types

Mule deer are the most common type of deer in this part of Texas. Similar to whitetails, they are more common in dryer areas. There are a few whitetail deer in this desert area of west Texas.

Several outfitters operate out of Marathon and nearby towns. Outfitters take care of all the details and let you focus on hunting. They will help you find the animal, and help you get it back to camp.

Public areas

Elephant Mountain is a wildlife management area of 23,000 acres between Marathon and Alpine. The area is open for hunting year-round, and there are special hunts during the year. The area is used as a wildlife research station.

Licensing

You must be a licensed hunter if you are 16 years old or older. Deer tags are required and you must record your kill and report it to the state wildlife department.
