Calcium Gluconate for Birds

Some pet birds will need extra calcium in the form of a calcium gluconate supplement.

Calcium is an important mineral for the development and growth of many animals, including birds. Calcium gluconate is one of the most readily available forms of calcium for administering to birds.

Types

There are several different forms in which calcium can be administered. For example, calcium carbonate is a natural form of calcium found in the environment and used to make chalk. Calcium gluconate is a calcium salt of gluconic acid, which is created through the oxidation of glucose.

Significance

Birds use calcium for maintaining their bones, building eggs, their muscle development as well as fat metabolism.

Risks

When calcium gluconate is prescribed by a veterinarian or purchased at the pharmacy, it should only be used as directed. A calcium overdose could be deadly.

Timeline

Because of its liquid form, calcium gluconate is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream of birds, providing a quick way to supply them with calcium.
