Sociologists follow a code of ethics.

Like most other professional organizations, the American Sociological Association has a code of ethics that provides a basic guideling for the principles and ethics that professionals must follow. The code consists of an introduction, preamble, five general principles and specific ethical standards. An addition to the code of ethics provides the rules and regulations for filing, investigating and resolving possible unethical conduct.

  1. Introduction and Preamble

    • The introduction and preamble to the American Sociological Association's code of ethics introduce the code and states the intention of the document. These sections also document the expectations of sociologists in terms of adhering to and living by the code of ethics.

    General Principles

    • Five general principles are addressed in the American Sociological Association's code of ethics. These general principles address professional competence, integrity, professional responsibility, social responsibility and respect for others and their rights.

    Ethical Standards

    • This section of the code of ethics sets enforceable rules of conduct for sociologists. According to the American Sociological Association, the ethical standards are written broadly to apply to various roles a sociologist may have. The ASA also states that the enforcement of these standards may vary depending on the context of the specifc act that is deemed unethical.
