Many plastic plumbing problems arise from using incorrect plastic cements and primers during installation. It is important to know about what types of cements are available, how they function and what types of pipes they go on to deter leaks and damages. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Function

    • Plastic primers and cements chemically soften the surface of the plastic pipe and the interior of the plastic fitting. Once applied the solvents melt the surfaces and as they evaporate, the pipes harden into one solid segment.

    Types

    • Because each type of plastic plumbing has a different chemical makeup, they require a specialized cement and primer. PVC, CPVC and ABS pipes each have specific cements to bond joints. Multi-purpose glue is available but must have a Uniform Plumbing Code stamp verifying that it meets building codes and will pass inspection.

    Identification

    • Every can of plastic cement comes clearly identifying what type, schedule and size of plastic pipe it is designed for. It should also include manufacturer information, instructions for use and information for storage and disposal.

    Warnings

    • Plastic plumbing cements and primers contain flammable chemicals that are also irritants to skin and eyes. Adequate ventilation is required when working with primers and cements.

    General Directions for Use

    • Follow manufacturer's labels when using primers and cements. Using the attached dauber, prime the surface of the pipe and the interior of the fitting. Spread a layer of plumbing cement over the primed pipe and fitting and with the cement still wet, insert the pipe into the fitting end. Twist the pipe or fitting to spread the cement evenly around the pipe.
