Customs Regulations for Entering Italy

The Italian Government Tourist Board reports that all luggage is subject to checks by customs officials when entering the country. Certain items are permitted to be taken into Italy free of any taxes, while others are limited or restricted.

  1. Free Entry

    • Each person entering Italy is allowed certain items in his luggage free of excise duties, including clothing and household items. Cigarettes and tobacco are limited in free amounts for each traveler, and two bottles of wine and one bottle of hard liquor are also allowed.

    Gifts

    • The Italian Government Tourist Board says there is no limit to the number of gifts that can be taken into Italy. Souvenirs bought by citizens not from European Union countries are not allowed to total more than $500 and must be declared to Italian customs officials.

    Special Items

    • The IATA Travel Center reports the import of animal products originating outside the European Union is prohibited. Weapons and ammunition entering Italy are checked by security staff and police before being released.
