Fireman and oilers are responsible for performing routine maintenance and service on locomotives, facilities and also checking oil, filling sand buckets and refueling. They also operate equipment as required.

  1. Training

    • All new hires of fire and oilers for a company will undergo different training, depending on the company. However, most will go to a training facility that combines classroom and field technique and instruction. This may be close to the area you are working, or will be in a different location.

    Earnings

    • Fireman and oilers often start off by a progression rate, again, depending on the company they work for. For some companies, the amount of years you work for the employer, the more you earn. This means the longer the stay with a company, the more your percentage of wage will increase.

    Schedule

    • Fireman and oilers must often work various shifts during the week, and may be called in on rest days or when they are not scheduled. They are subjected to overtime, but are paid on an overtime rate.
