Lumens DLP Vs. LCD

DLP projector

DLP, or digital light processing, and LCD, or liquid crystal display, projectors are the most commonly produced digital projectors on the market today. Lumen output or general brightness of a television projector differs between models using DLP and models using LCD technology.

  1. Light Efficiency

    Wattage

    • Check the projector lamps' wattage as it can differ between different models of the same type. Higher wattage means higher lumen output in both technologies. A 400-watt DLP projector can rate 3,600 lumens, while a 190-watt LCD projector only rates 2,700 lumens, even though the LCD model is more energy efficient.

    Other Considerations

    • While wattage and energy efficiency do determine most lumen output, it is important to check the specific model if you are considering a projector. There are different types of lamps that can be used in DLP and LCD models that can affect energy efficiency and lumen output. Contrast ratio can also change color saturation of the image, affecting contrast levels between dark and light colors, which can make the image appear brighter or dimmer. Because of these variables, it is best to research the wattage and lumen output of the specific models that you are interested in.
