T5 Vs. T8 Lights
There are advantages and disadvantages with both T5 and T8 fluorescent lights. Perhaps the biggest difference between T5 and T8 lights is their applications. Fluorescent bulb manufacturers offer their T5 and T8 fluorescent lights as more efficient options for applications that currently use high-intensity discharge lights. Does this Spark an idea?

Both fluorescent lamps offer peak outputs at different temperatures. T8 bulb peak light output occurs at 77 degrees Fahrenheit. T5 bulbs peak at 95 degrees. T5 fluorescent tubes are shorter than T8 tubes because of their intended applications. High-output T5 bulbs (T5-HO) are the same size as T5 bulbs, but they are engineered to operate even more efficiently than T5 bulbs. Both T5 and T8 bulbs can last for more than 10,000 hours of use.

The obvious drawback associated with T8 fluorescent bulbs is that they are not as efficient as newer T5 and high-output T5 fluorescent bulbs. T5 bulbs employ ballasts that sometimes take more than two minutes to heat up and produce visible light. In rare cases, these ballasts can quickly overheat, rendering the bulb useless.

Both of these types of fluorescent bulbs are commonly found in all types of settings, especially commercial and industrial settings. T5 fluorescent bulbs are widely used for personal lighting, such as for desk lamps. High-output T5 bulbs and T8 bulbs often are found in ceiling light fixtures. They are used most frequently to provide lighting for larger areas. T5-HO bulbs as well as T8 bulbs are designed for placement more than 18 feet away from people or a particular work area.
