The Life of a Cabin Crew

The Life of a Cabin Crew thumbnail
A job in a cabin crew can be very exciting.

Working on a cabin crew or as a flight attendant may appeal to those looking to work while traveling. Cabin crews spend time in various locales, though some find the schedule disruptive. The cabin crew handles many flight responsibilities, including relaying safety information and serving meals.

  1. Applying

    • Applicants need a high school diploma or GED, and college experience is a plus. Customer service experience is looked highly upon, as is being bilingual and well-groomed.

    Duties

    • Crew members attend briefings to discuss safety, weather and flight time, and delegate responsibilities such as making announcements to the passengers. The cabin crew makes sure dining supplies are prepared. Once passengers board, the cabin crew checks the carry-on luggage. The flight attendants review safety procedures with the passengers. Once the flight begins, the cabin crew attends to passengers' needs, including meals and drinks.

    Compensation

    • According to cabincrewjobs.com, salaried cabin crew members can expect to earn between $30,000 and $50,000, though starting salaries can be as low as $14,000. Flight attendants are usually part of a union.

    Lineholders vs. Reserves

    • Cabin crews have two types of employees: Lineholders have more experience and a set schedule given to them in advance, while reserves are called on when lineholders are unavailable.

    Perks

    • The cabin crew briefly spends time in the flight's destination city. The airline will provide a hotel room for overnight layovers and cover the expense of meals, as well as various frequent-flyer programs.
