Certified motorcycle training helps you ride more safely and effectively.

Certified motorcycle training, or motorcycle safety classes, give new riders the skills and knowledge they need to avoid accidents. Riders may take basic rider training and then progress to more advanced classes.

  1. Requirements

    • To take certified motorcycle training, you'll need at least a motorcycle learner's permit. Most basic training classes provide the helmet and motorcycle, but you're expected to wear sturdy boots, gloves, pants and a jacket. According to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, you must also know how to ride a bicycle.

    Format

    • Typical certified motorcycle training classes include classroom time where you learn how to recognize and avoid hazards. You'll also perform parking lot maneuvers which take you from the basics of bike control to turns, swerves and stops. At the end of the course, the instructor will assess your riding skills and administer a multiple-choice quiz.

    Advantages

    • Certified motorcycle training will make you a safer and more aware rider. Some states, such as New York, allow you to skip the riding test if you take an approved class. More experienced riders can brush up on their skills with an advanced riding class.
