People who reside or earn income in New Jersey can claim tax refunds by submitting a state tax return by the April 15 deadline. In 2010, the average tax return was about $500.

  1. Time Frame

    • Residents who file their New Jersey state taxes by mail and opt to receive their tax refund check by mail should get the check within three to four weeks, as of 2010. Those who file online or have their tax refund directly deposited to a bank account should receive it within two weeks.

    Refund Status

    • People who filed taxes in New Jersey can call the state's automated phone system to check the status of their tax refund checks, including when a check was mailed or deposited to a bank account. People calling from New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware or Maryland can dial 800-323-4400; all others must call 609-826-4400.

    Returned Checks

    • New Jersey's Department of Treasury maintains an online database of tax refund checks returned as undeliverable by the U.S. Postal Service in the prior seven years. People who failed to receive a check can enter their names and social security numbers to search for a tax refund check and submit a claim form if the state has it.
