The Russian blue is a popular short haired cat breed and the basis for the long haired cat breed called the Neblung. The Russian blue is slightly smaller and weighs less than many other purebred cats.

Cats are usually not measured from the ground to the shoulder like show dogs or horses because the cats usually do not stand still. They are usually measured in weight. But Russian blues tend to be the same size as an average alley cat, which is 6 to 10 inches high and between 6 to 12 pounds.

Russian blue males tend to be larger and heavier than the females. Russian blue males that have not been neutered can grow thick jowls. There are also size differences in individual cats depending on their health as kittens.

There are several breeds of cat of similar gray-blue coloration. The Russian blue is the smallest, lightest and most fine-boned of these breeds.
