History
-
Carnations are called the flower of the gods. The scientific name for carnations is Dianthus. This name originates from a Greek botanist. Carnations receive their name from two Greek words dios, and anthos, which means god and flower.
Sunlight and Moisture
-
Most carnations have ruffled petals. Sunlight is essential when growing and caring for carnations, which need a few hours of full sun each day. Although it's vital to keep the flowers moist, individuals should be careful not to overwater carnations. Overwatering the flower can make the foliage turn yellow.

Temperature and Other Considerations
-
Carnations are native to the Mediterranean region. Individuals that grow carnations should also consider the temperature in which the flowers are kept. The best temperature for growing carnations is between 50 and 59 degree Fahrenheit during the day and 41 to 46 degrees at night. Providing care for carnations is fairly easy. They can grow up to 24 inches tall under proper care. Once the flowers have been cut, they should last anywhere from two to three weeks.
