Programmer analysts, also called computer systems analysts, specialize in designing and updating computer software that tells computers what to do. Analysts typically have at least a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field.

Programmer analysts follow procedures and requirements to create, improve or modify computer systems. They create software to communicate, or network, with other computers within organizations' departments. They work in laboratories or offices for approximately 40 hours a week.
Duties

Programmer analysts perform duties such as deciding what type of hardware and software are needed to complete projects. They confer with clients on what they need and coordinate and link computer systems together. Analysts implement and test software programs to make sure things are working properly. They also eliminate any problems.

Considerations

Analysts need qualifications such as strong problem-solving skills and the ability to multi-task and work independently. In 2009, the median salary for programmer analysts was $80,430 a year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
