Florida Sales Tax on Gifts
Any specific transaction in the Unites States that involves money may have federal and state tax consequences. This includes possible sales tax consequences for gifting in Florida.
-
Purchases
-
The sales tax consequences depend on the nature of the gift. If you visit a Florida retailer and purchase an item, the retailer will collect Florida's 6 percent sales tax. For example, if you buy a friend a bottle of perfume in Florida, you will pay sales tax.
Gifting Cash
-
There are no sales tax consequences when you give a gift of cash. In addition, Florida does not have a separate "gift tax".
-
Recipient of the Gift
-
There are no immediate sales tax consequences to the recipient of the gift. However, if the recipient spends the cash in Florida, then sales tax will apply on those purchases.
Out of State Purchases
-
If an item was purchased out of state and brought to Florida within six months, then Florida's use tax may apply to the continued consumption of that item in the state. Florida's use tax is also 6 percent; however, it is offset by sales tax paid in another state.
Internet Sales
-
Even if an online retailer does not impose a sales tax, Florida residents buying online are subject to Florida's sales and use taxes.
The Delivery Charges
-
If the delivery of a gift is arranged during the purchase, then Florida's sales tax may also apply to the delivery charges.
