Elk Hunting in Alberta, Canada
Alberta offers some of the best elk hunting in North America. But plan ahead--elk are among the most wary game to pursue.
-
Hunting Season
-
Outfitters offer hunts for early-season archery, rut season archery, rut rifle season and late season rifle. The full season runs from early September to end of October. Check the official "Alberta Guide to Hunting" because dates vary.
Allocations
-
Nonresident elk licenses are limited to fewer than 500, most for rifle but some reserved for archery. In Alberta, every nonresident hunter is required to have a licensed guide, so plan early.
-
Licenses
-
Elk roam the foothills and east slope of the Rockies. To secure a hunting license, you must first purchase a Wildlife Identification Number for $8, good for five years. The hunting license for an antlered white-tailed deer is approximately $180, including tax.
Costs
-
Depending on the season, outfitters' fees start at $4,000 and go to $6,500 for a week. For one-on-one guiding, there's an additional $1,500. Fees include transportation from and to the airport, accommodations, meals, travel during the hunt by horseback or ATV. Licenses and tags are additional.
Preparation
-
Be prepared for cold weather and rainstorms. Register your firearms at customs even if you are renting or borrowing weapons in Canada.
