Jeep Cherokee Transfer Case Information
Five models were used from 1984-2001. Built by New Process Gear, all have aluminum housings, planetary gear low-range and chain-driven front output. Models 207 and 231 are part-time. Models 228, 229 and 242 are full-time.

Part-time versus Full-time Four Wheel Drive
-
Part-time systems have no differential between the front and rear output shafts, thus no way for the front and rear axles to turn at different speeds. This provides greater traction in slick conditions but erratic steering and excessive wear if used on solid surfaces. Full-time systems include a central differential, and may be driven in four-wheel-drive on any surface.
New Process 207
-
Used from 1984 through 1987, the New Process 207 offers 2WD high, 4WD high, Neutral and 4WD low ranges.
-
New Process 231
-
Beginning in 1988, the model 231 replaced the 207 and is functionally identical.
New Process 228
-
Used from 1985 through 1987, this model has a differential gear set allowing full-time operation.
New Process 229
-
Used only in 1984, this model used a viscous coupling as a limited-slip center differential.
New Process 242
-
This model replaced the 228 as the full-time option beginning in 1988. The 242 includes a locking central differential, allowing part-time or full-time 4WD.
