History of Touch Screen Technology

Touch screens seem to work like magic, permitting the user to manipulate a digital environment with the touch a finger. Common now everywhere from cell phones to store kiosks, touchscreen technology dates back to the 1970s.

  1. Origin

    • The story begins with the invention of the Elograph by Elographics. The technology was invented by Dr. Samuel Hurst, who founded the company in 1971 and patented his device in 1972.

    Purpose

    • The Elograph was designed as a Graphical Data Digitizer to digitize strip chart data for the scientific market, where it proved insignificant.

    Developments

    • Hurst led the development of transparent touchscreens, first produced in 1978, and five-wire resistive technology, the most commonly used touchscreen technology. Applications of resistive touch screens include cell phones and hand-held games.

    Unveiling

    • Elographs gave the public the first chance to see and use a touchscreen in 1982 when it displayed 33 television covered with transparent touch-sensitive panels at the World's Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee.

    First Touch Screen Computer

    • In 1983, Hewlett Packard invented the first touch screen computer, HP-150 in 1983. The HP-50 used infrared technology. Monitors using this technology are very durable, and they are often used in industrial and military applications.
