Mobile home parks are common in Florida.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) sets wind zone construction standards for manufactured homes. HUD has established three wind zones. The agency requires that manufactured homes must be built to withstand the perils of living in wind-prone areas. Florida contains Wind Zones II and III. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Zone III

    • Wind Zone III is the most vulnerable to tropical storms. Manufactured homes within this zone must be built to withstand winds of up to 110 miles per hour. There are 14 Wind Zone III counties in Florida, all of them along the coast.

    Zone II

    • All other Florida counties are classified as Wind Zone II, where new manufactured homes must withstand winds of up to 100 miles per hour. There are no Wind Zone I counties in Florida.

    Grandfather Clause

    • The wind zone restrictions apply only to new installations. Older homes that don't meet the construction standards do not have to be upgraded. Also, if a mobile home park is sold and mobile homes are evicted in the process, the homes can be moved within the county even if they do not meet the wind zone requirement.
