Aggression & Behavior in a Cricket

There are several hundred species of cricket. Some of the more common types are the house cricket, field cricket, ground cricket, snowy tree cricket, camel cricket and northern mole cricket.

  1. Courting

    • The male of many cricket species will rub his front wings together to produce a high-pitched sound in hopes of attracting a female. (Wingless crickets are mute.) This "chirping" can be quite annoying to humans, especially at night, and can cause the insect to be unwelcome in and near homes.

    Calculating the Outdoor Temperature

    • The snowy tree cricket chirps at a rate varying with the outdoor temperature. In order to calculate the temperature in Fahrenheit, count the number of chirps in a 15-second span, then add 40. For example, 37 chirps per 15 seconds indicates 77 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Protection

    • A house cricket can bite you if handled carelessly. If you must handle a cricket, cup the animal in your hand. You can also hold the cricket firmly by the sides of the thorax.

    Nocturnal Behavior

    • Most crickets can be heard and seen more frequently at night. Crickets are attracted to light; therefore it is not unusual to find large groups around streetlights and house lights at night.

    House Invasions

    • House crickets can crawl, jump or fly to enter the windows on the second and third stories of a building. To minimize home invasion caulk and seal cracks and crevices of all windows and doors. Keep trash and firewood away from the house and keep areas around the building free of moisture, weeds and vegetation.
