Canine Constipation & Milk of Magnesium

Dogs can be treated for constipation with milk of magnesia.

Humans and dogs share some health problems in common. They also can be treated with the same medication. Just like humans, a dog experiencing constipation can be given milk of magnesia for relief.

Constipation

Like humans, dogs can experience occasional constipation. When this occurs, the dog might not have regular bowel movements for a couple days, according to "The Complete Home Veterinary Guide."

Causes

Constipation can be caused by too little moisture in a dog's diet or by a dog eating garbage or other indigestible materials.

Symptoms

A constipated dog will strain to pass stool. The stool that does pass will be hard and it could be painful for the dog.

Treatment

Milk of magnesia is a safe laxative to give to a dog for constipation. It comes in tablets and can be easily given to a dog with a treat, according to "The Dog's Drugstore."

Considerations

Stimulant laxatives are not safe to give to a dog. A veterinarian can recommend dosages of milk of magnesia based on a dog's size.
