Seizure in a Bearded Dragon

Seizure in a Bearded Dragon thumbnail
There are many reasons bearded dragons may appear to have seizures.

The bearded dragon is a medium-sized lizard native to Australia.

Seizures in bearded dragons are a symptom of many different issues that may be present, including deficiencies, viruses and parasites.

  1. Identification

    • When determining the cause of seizure-like symptoms or tremors in a bearded dragon, it's important to look for any other signs of problems. Other symptoms can include stiff limbs, no appetite, not eating, swollen abdomen, discharges from the eyes or mouth and weight loss.

    Types

    • If the seizures are caused by parasites or viruses, gastrointestinal symptoms like runny feces, swollen bellies and lack of appetite will be a sign. If the seizures or tremors are caused by a calcium deficiency, lack of movement and brittle bones will be more apparent.

    Misconceptions

    • A common behavior of the bearded dragon is to bob their head, and this may be done in the presence of other bearded dragons or when the bearded dragon is kept alone. This is a normal behavior and not the sign of a health problem. Bearded dragons also "brumate", a form of hibernation, and during this period they will not eat.

    Solution

    • A veterinarian will be able to determine what is causing the seizures and medication can be administered accordingly. If it is a calcium issue, calcium injections can also be given by a vet.
