Information on Milk Glass Dishes

Milk glass when held up to the light actually looks like milk.

Milk glass, an inexpensive, opaque, white glass with dense, even color, originated in Italy in the 16th century. In the early part of the 20th century, milk glass was considered synonymous with cultural prosperity in America.

Modern History

In the 1930s and '40s, individuals considered milk glass less elegant and not as well made, but still just as desirable. By the early '30s, milk glass dishes found their way into homes in a variety of patterns.

Manufacturers

Most of the companies that made milk glass were located in Indiana, Pennsylvania and Ohio. Not all milk glass pieces are signed. The leading manufacturers of milk glass included Westmoreland Glass Co., Fenton Art Glass Co. and the Indiana Glass Co.

Patterns

Milk glass dish patterns displayed decorative, raised surfaces featuring hobnail, grape, and block and fan raised elements.

Popular Design

Fruit designed milk glass dishes were popular in the 1930s to '50s. Strawberries, plums, raspberries, grapes and peaches were painted designs on the white milk glass with a beaded edge around the dish.

Authenticity

There have been many reproductions of milk glass made since the '60s. True milk glass displays a milky color and a thick, creamy texture when held up to the light.
