Relationship to Bride
-
Traditionally, the person chosen as matron of honor is the sister of the bride. However, a sister-in-law, close friend or another close relative may be chosen.
Obligations
-
The matron of honor is the principal attendant to the bride. She, along with the maid of honor if there is one, is responsible for helping the bride address invitations, planning the bachelorette party, planning the bridal shower, and taking care of the wedding gown after the wedding. This is in addition to any specific tasks assigned by the bride.

Apparel
-
The matron of honor wears and pays for a gown chosen by the bride. The bride may chose to alter the style of the dress worn by the principal attendants, however, the look usually remains similar to the rest of the bridal party.
Toast
-
The matron of honor is responsible for offering a toast to the bride and groom at their reception. The toast usually includes fond memories of the couple and well wishes.
Fun Fact
-
In Roman times, the maid or matron of honor dressed exactly like the bride in order to thwart anyone who might want to steal her from her groom. By dressing like the bride, the abductors would be confused as to the true bride's identity.
