Teacher Aide Standards
Many school districts employ teachers' aides to help classroom teachers meet the needs of students in the classroom. Teachers' aides provide vital support to many classrooms and students.
-
Function
-
Teacher's aides may prepare classroom materials, tutor students, supervise students and help maintain classroom discipline.
Types
-
Classroom teacher's aides may work alongside a classroom teacher and provide support to the teacher and the students. Special education teacher aides may help disabled children individually or in small groups.
-
Education Requirements
-
Teacher's aides must have a high school diploma or GED. In addition, they need at least 48 hours of college or an associate's degree.
Other Requirements
-
Some states, but not all, require that teacher's aides apply for a license. Requirements for a teacher's aide license vary by state.
Considerations
-
Teacher's aides who have not earned the minimum amount of college hours may be able to demonstrate their knowledge and skills by taking skills and knowledge tests. Prospective teacher's aides should check with their local school districts to determine what options are available.
