FAQ on the Citizenship Application
Citizenship application, also known as application for naturalization or N-400, is a part of naturalization process that allows people to obtain U.S. citizenship through immigration, rather than birth in the U.S.
-
Eligibility
-
Basic eligibility criteria include being 18 years of age, permanent residence status, physical presence and continuous residence in the U.S for a certain number of years. These requirements might vary depending on age, marriage to a U.S. citizen, military service, physical and mental conditions of the applicant. United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) provides detailed eligibility information on its website.
Supporting Documents
-
N-400 requires certain supporting documentation, such as copies of I-551, I-90 or criminal records. These requirements vary depending on the applicants and shall be checked against the document checklist, under "Guide to Naturalization." Unless stated otherwise only copies of documents should be included. Any documents in a foreign language shall be accompanied by a certified translation.
-
Filing Fee
-
The application fee for N-400 in 2010 was $595 plus an additional $80 for biometrics services for applicants under 75 years of age.
Where to File
-
The correct mailing address for N-400 depends on the state of residence of the applicant and his eligibility status. Information on where to mail the application is listed on USCIS website and on N-400 application instructions.
Processing
-
In addition to approving or denying your N-400, USCIS may also request additional information or documentation or reject the application. Unlike denial, which is determined bases on the merits of the application, such as eligibility requirements, rejection means the application was incomplete or otherwise not submitted properly. Rejected applications can be resubmitted.
