What is the Penalty for Driving in Indiana Without Insurance?
The Indiana State Code details the provisions and requirements for drivers who register vehicles or out-of-state drivers who use Indiana roads. The laws, known as financial responsibility laws, determine how much insurance is required, how to provide proof of insurance, and penalties for driving without insurance. State insurance laws are enforced by the police and monitored by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

Indiana code 9-25-4 requires drivers to have an insurance policy that covers, at minimum, a driver's liability for the vehicle. This rule applies to anyone who registers or operates a vehicle on Indiana roads. Full coverage insurance policies are not required by the state of Indiana. However, full insurance coverage might be required if the driver has a lien on the vehicle.
Amount of Insurance

Drivers in Indiana must have $25,000 of insurance coverage for bodily injury or death of a person in an accident. For the death of two or more people in a single accident, the coverage amount increases to $50,000. A driver must also have at least $10,000 in coverage for damage or destruction of property.

Proof of Insurance

Drivers are in an accident are required to provide proof of insurance within 45 days after the incident is reported, unless insurance information is already on file with the bureau, according to Indiana code 9-25-5 (Proof of Financial Responsibility). The persons involved must show that insurance was in effect at the time of the incident by showing a certificate of insurance compliance.
Suspensions

Upon a person's first offense for driving without insurance in Indiana, his driver's license and registration will be suspended for 90 days, according to Indiana Code 9-25-6. If a driver is caught driving without insurance in Indiana a second time within three years, their license and registration will be suspended for up to one year.
Financial Penalties

Once an Indiana driver's license and registration is suspended, the driver will have to pay reinstatement fees once the penalty period has ended to obtain a license. For a single offense, the registration fee is $150 and increases for each additional violation.
