Axis Buck Hunting in Texas

Axis Buck Hunting in Texas thumbnail
Axis bucks sport large but simple antlers.

The Handbook of Texas Online reports that axis deer are larger than whitetail, originated in India, were introduced to Texas in the 1930s and sport distinctive rows of white spots on tan backs and sides.

  1. Identifying Axis Bucks

    • Axis bucks produce antlers on an individual cycle, so hunters may see deer with hardened or in-velvet antlers any time of year, even simultaneously. Though large, antlers rarely have more than three points.

    Season

    • According to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), Texas allows hunting of all exotic--i.e., non-native--animals year-round. Individual ranches may set their own restrictions.

    Antler Restrictions/Bag Limits

    • Individual landowners may set antler-spread minimums. Harvesting fees and your budget set the limit on how many axis bucks you take.

    Required License & Education

    • TPWD explains that Texans need a valid hunting license to hunt axis bucks. Non-residents buy an annual or five-day special license for exotics.

    Where to Hunt

    • Exotic game ranches manage their wildlife to produce trophy axis bucks in Texas. Ranches like BugScuffle Ranch permit only bow hunting; others, including 7 Canyons Ranch and 777 Ranch, offer trophy hunts using firearms---or cameras.
