International Flight Attendant Training
International flight attendants are responsible for ensuring the safety and comfort of airline passengers. For this important and highly visible job, training ranges from on-the-job instruction to college degree programs.

Minimum Requirements

A high school diploma or GED is the minimum requirement needed to seek employment as a flight attendant.
Additional Skills

The ability to speak one or more major foreign languages is often a requirement for a job as an international flight attendant.

College Programs

Many airlines also prefer a college degree in a social or customer service-oriented area of study, such as psychology, hospitality, tourism, education or communications. Several colleges in the United States also offer specific training certificates or degrees, including Mercer County Community College in New Jersey and Glendale Community College and Orange Coast College, both in California.

Several alternatives exist to a college degree or certificate. Flight Attendant and Cockpit Crew Training Seminars offers several internationally recognized short programs at various locations, including Seattle, Chicago, San Francisco and Dallas. On-the-Job Training

Regardless of previous education, airlines generally require formal on-the-job training. Training is typically three to six weeks long. It covers emergency procedures, first aid and CPR certification, survival strategies, flight regulations, food and beverage catering, company policies and customer service skills.
Prospects

The federal Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that demand for well-trained flight attendants will increase by at least 8 percent through 2018. As of 2010, the average yearly salary for an international flight attendant was $35,930.
