Immunodeficiency viruses in animals make it difficult for animals to fight off infections

According to HIV/AIDS awareness website AVERT, HIV/AIDS is a condition solely found in human beings. Similar conditions to HIV/AIDS are found in some animals such as cats and chimpanzees.

  1. HIV/AIDS

    • The human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV, is a life threatening condition. The latter stages of the condition is called acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, or AIDS.

    Animal Research

    • According to the Medical Research Modernization Committee medical researchers have so far failed to pass HIV/AIDS on to animal subjects. Research has revealed immunodeficiency viruses found in cats is more closely related to similar viruses found in cows and sheep.

    Origins

    • AVERT explains the origins of HIV/AIDS are thought to be related to a form of simian immunodeficiency virus, or SIV, found in a chimpanzee originating from west-central Africa. How the disease crossed species is still unknown.

    Spread

    • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explains that HIV/AIDS cannot be spread from animal to humans, or vice versa.

    Infection

    • Animals, such as cats, are infected with feline immunodeficiency virus around the world. The most common form of infection with feline immunodeficiency virus is through cat bites, according to Cornell University Veterinary Department.
