Ask the wedding guests to wear traditional Indian dress to help celebrate.

Traditional Indian weddings are lavish celebrations that bring two families and the community together. The purpose of an Indian wedding announcement, or Indian wedding card, is to announce the marriage to the community. It is an open invitation for anyone to come a celebrate.

  1. Style

    • The Indian wedding celebration is an elegant and extravagant, event so the invitation should reflect this. Use vibrant colors and embellished paper. This formal invitation is the only thing sent out. No save-the-dates or R.S.V.P. cards are sent with the invitations.

    Customs

    • The customary practice is to send out two invitations--one from the groom's side, the other from the bride's side--a tradition from the days when marriages were arranged.

    Recipients

    • The wedding invitations are sent to family, friends and colleagues. It is tradition to allow the guests to bring any number of guests they choose. This word of mouth invitation is accepted and widely practiced.

    Addressing Envelopes

    • According to respected etiquette guru Emily Post, the same rules apply for addressing an Indian wedding invitation as any formal invitation. The envelope is addressed with titles, first name and last name. Titles are abbreviated, but everything else should be spelled out.

    Symbols

    • Traditionally a Ganesha is pictured on the invitation. Ganesha is believed to bring prosperity and happiness to the couple and the joining families.
