Governors in 48 states have four-year terms of office. Vermont and New Hampshire have two-year terms.
States With No Term Limits

Fourteen states---Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Texas, Vermont, Washington and Wisconsin---have no gubernatorial term limits.

Consecutive Terms

In 27 states, governors are limited to two consecutive terms. In 11 of these states---Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Kansas, Kentucky, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and West Virginia---a governor who has served two consecutive terms can become eligible again after a four-year hiatus.

In Delaware, Michigan, Mississippi and Missouri, governors are limited to two terms, whether consecutive or nonconsecutive.
Other Forms of Term Limits

In Montana, the limit is eight years within a 16-year period. In Wyoming, the limit is two four-year terms within a 16-year period. The limit is eight years in Florida, with no lifetime limit. Utah's limit is 12 consecutive years. Virginia's limit is only one term, but it is renewable after a four-year hiatus.
