Flounders are bottom feeders.

Flounder fishing is a very popular sport from a boat, pier, jetty or beach. A fishing line for flounder can be either a monofilament or braided line. Either one will work with a conventional or spinning reel.

  1. Monofilament Line

    • Monofilament line is the most popular line used for flounder fishing because of its strength, availability in all pound-test lines, and low cost. It comes in many colors such as white, green, blue, and clear.

    Braided Line

    • Braided line is not much used compared to monofilament, but it is the line of choice for many flounder fisherman because of its high knot strength, lack of stretch, and sensitivity to a flounder's strike. Braided line is usually cream color.

    Boat or Pier

    • If fishing for flounder from a boat or pier, monofilament line will work fine since there is no casting a long distance and line stretch is not a problem.

    Surf Fishing

    • If surf fishing for flounder, a braided line is preferred since it has no stretch when extending a lot of line. You will be able to feel a flounder's strike better than if you were using monofilament.

    Line Weight

    • No matter what type of reel or line, a 20 to 30-pound test line will be more than adequate for flounder fishing, whether from a boat, pier or in the surf.
