What Is in the Firefighter One Exam?
The firefighter I exam, taken after completion of several classroom courses and hands-on training, prepares you for the next level of firefighter training and the firefighter II exam.

Written Exam

The written portion of exam measures cognitive skills and includes questions in areas such as problem solving, reading comprehension, safety objectives and mathematical functions. A passing score, which varies by state, must be earned before proceeding to the practical exam.
Practical Exam

The practical portion of the firefighter I exam tests your physical ability to perform tasks required of a firefighter, such as navigating through smoky areas, crawling through small spaces, carrying fire hoses and operating engine ladders.

Prerequisites

You must be at least 18 years old and have either a high school diploma or a GED. Most states also require successful completion of a hazardous materials course prior to the exam.
Physical Requirements

While not required by all states, many request that a physical examination be completed to ensure you are physically capable of handling the duties of a firefighter.
Background

Many states require a background check before you take the firefighter I exam. Past offenses such as DUI or violent crimes may exclude you from taking the exam.
