What Is Cottage Style?

Light and white are two of the most important characteristics of cottage style.

The cottage style of decorating is often characterized as soft, rustic and well-suited for informal and casual lifestyles. Colors are soft but bright and the look is weathered. This type of decor works well with the goal of simplicity and comfort.

Colors

The color palette in cottage style is soft with an abundance of white, making for a light, breezy style. Pastels keep the look bright but muted.

Fabrics

Fabrics used in cottage style do not overtake the decor, so tones are light and materials are lightweight. Floral patterns are often mixed and coordinated with stripes and plaid fabrics.

Furniture

Cottage-style furniture is often lightweight and take advantage of wicker, simple iron pieces and older time-worn finds from garage sales and flea markets. Pieces are compact, similar to the smaller spaces of most cottages, and crafted from local or natural materials.

Walls

Walls are kept white but many decorators use wallpaper with floral designs, stripes and plaids to complement the patterns in the furnishings and window decor.

Windows

Keeping with the soft and light style, windows are kept minimally covered. White sheers offer plenty of light with a degree of privacy. A simple valance with the sheers can add a little more visual interest.
