The chief medical officer is responsible for overseeing health care.

A chief medical officer, or CMO, is the senior physician in a hospital or health care setting such as emergency medical services, providing leadership to the medical staff in an executive role. The daily management of care rests with the CMO.

  1. Administration

    • The CMO is a liaison between the medical staff and administration, as is the case with Monadnock Community Hospital in New Hampshire. The CMO may report to the chief of staff or the chief executive officer.

    Management

    • A CMO is responsible for coordinating patient care and safety. In the Tricare Military Health System, the CMO oversees quality assessment and improvement in the health care programs. Communication between departments is coordinated in order to provide efficient and effective health care.

    Supervision

    • It is a responsibility of the CMO to supervise physicians and practitioners in a variety of specialties. In the Department of Veterans Affairs, the CMO encourages growth and development of the staff.

    Qualifications

    • The CMO must have an advanced medical degree, such as an M.D. or O.D., and previous experience in management or leadership roles in the health care profession.

    Credentials

    • The credential designation of CMO is supported by the National EMS Management Association and the International Association of Fire Chiefs, according to the Center for Public Safety Excellence.
