Forensic Pathology Career Information

A forensic pathologist is also known as a medical examiner. These medical doctors have several years of post-graduate education beyond the high school level. A forensic pathologist works closely with law enforcement agencies and aids in criminal investigations.

    • Forensic pathologists perform autopsies on people who have died. They are responsible for determining the cause and manner of death.

    Significance

    • The evidence that is compiled by the pathologist is often used in court as evidence. The pathologist may also be called upon to testify in legal cases.

    Educational Requirements

    • To become a forensic pathologist, a person must have a medical degree, either an M.D. or a D.O. The doctor must then complete a four-to-five year long medical residency and a one-to-two year long fellowship in forensic pathology.

    Work Sites

    • Forensic pathologists work in hospitals, coroners' offices and medical examiners' offices.

    Salary

    • In 2010, the salary of a forensic pathologist ranged from $51,456 to $169,942, according to Payscale.com.
