Romania's Policy on Illicit Drug Trafficking
While illicit drug trafficking makes money for traffickers, it can end up hurting national governments and their populations. The government of Romania acknowledges that increased drug trafficking can lead to disease, social isolation, unemployment and poverty.

Romania's National Anti-Drug Agency (NADA) was established by the Romanian government in Dec. 2002. One of its chief objectives is controlling the illegal production and trafficking of drug supplies within the country.

With an official policy against trafficking, drug traffickers still find ways of thriving in Romania. According to the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), some Romanian judges don't view drug trafficking as a social threat.

Romania exercises a prevention policy by spreading information about the risks of drug use and building a network of counseling and prevention centers throughout the country under the authority of NADA, according to the European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA).

The European Commission (EC) cooperates in Romania's fight against drug trafficking by sending EC specialists to help hone and modify trafficking legislation.

Challenges in bringing drug traffickers to justice continue in spite of legal infrastructure set against trafficking. For example, witnesses often fear speaking out because of an insufficient witness protection program.
