In most regions of the world, manufacturers of consumer products are not required by law to disclose their ingredients. Recent scientific research has found that air fresheners in particular contain trace amounts of toxic chemicals.

  1. Unlisted Chemicals

    • The All Africa website reports on the findings of a recent public heath study conducted on laundry detergents and air fresheners. The test results show that several leading air fresheners contain potentially harmful compounds that are not listed in the products' list of ingredients.

    Tri-Ethylene Glycol

    • Tri-ethylene glycol can be found in car air fresheners, but it also helps to keep tobacco products fresh and moist. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency lists this compound as a hazardous air pollutant known to cause kidney malfunctions.

    Hydrocarbon Propellant

    • A recent article in Custom Rigs magazine reported on the presence of liquefied petroleum gases like propane and isobutane in air fresheners. Overexposure to these hydrocarbon propellants can cause nausea and dizziness.

    Di-Ethyl Phthalate

    • Di-ethyl phthalate is a compound that can be found in car air fresheners. Also called DEP, this compound has been banned from children's toys in California and has been linked to problems with hormonal growth.

    Dangerous Plug-Ins

    • A recent study published in the Times of India found that plug-in air fresheners and smog can combine to form a toxic smog in your home. The compounds the study found in air fresheners can react with ozone to create formaldehyde.
