ODNR & Hunter Safety

The ODNR works to assure that hunters are safe in the field.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) provides classes and resources to assure hunters enjoy their sport in a safe manner. It offers hunter safety classes statewide and requires sportsmen to hold a safety certification before hunting in most circumstances.

  1. Hunter Safety Classes

    • The ODNR provides hunter safety classes in a variety of locations around the state. Subjects covered in the classes include gun safety, hunting regulations, conservation and ethics. Classes are free of charge and are generally taken on multiple days with total instruction time lasting about 8 to 12 hours.

    Home Hunter Safety Classes

    • The ODNR also offers a home study version of the Hunter Safety class. This method is designed to help those with busy schedules to complete the classes in their own home. The home study classes still require some time in a class but the amount is reduced.

    Proficiency Testing

    • Proficiency testing is another option for experienced hunters to acquire a hunter safety certification from the ODNR. The testing allows for knowledgeable hunters to forgo classroom instruction and simply take the hunter safety test.

    Apprentice Hunting License

    • The ODNR also provides an apprentice hunting license which allows a novice hunter who has not yet received a hunter safety certification to join with another hunter. The hunter accompanying the apprentice must be licensed and 21 years of age or older.

    Becoming an Instructor

    • Hunter Safety Instructors are often volunteers, while ODNR employees also teach classes. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and pass a criminal background investigation. Instructors must attend one of the training academies that are held in various locations around the state.
