Candle Making for Kids

Candle Making for Kids thumbnail
Kids can remember a trip to the beach by making a sand candle.

While wax melting and candle pouring are best left to adults, children can get involved by adding unique touches to personalize their own candles.

  1. Sand Candles

    • This craft can be done indoors using a container or as a souvenir from a beach trip. Make the sand slightly damp. Have kids make impressions in the sand using jars. Pour wax into the impression. The candle will have sand on the outside when it is finished.

    Crayons

    • Crayons are a fun way to add color to wax and learn about mixing colors. Kids can throw bits of used crayons in the wax and watch to colors change.

    Jar Candles

    • Children can use glitter, ribbon, beads and other accessories to decorate glass jars after candles have been poured. Run warm water over jars to heat them before adding hot wax to prevent cracking the glass.

    Cookie Cutters

    • Kids can pick out their favorite shaped cookie cutters as molds for floating candles. Roll out clay or play dough and place the cookie cutter in the center to prevent wax leaks.

    Jelly Beans

    • Add jelly beans by using a mold with an insert. Have kids fill the area outside the insert with jelly beans. Pour in wax and let harden. Remove the insert and fill hollow area with wax and let harden. When lit, the jelly beans in the candle will seem to glow.
