The Birds & Bees Discussion

Teaching children about sex can be difficult.

Children eventually begin to ask some basic questions about the beginnings of life. Most parents find this discussion difficult, given the nature of the conversations but understand that it is essential as part of their children's education.

  1. When to Have the Talk

    • Each child is different, but it is best to begin answering questions when children ask them. Gauge your child’s level of maturity to tailor your conversation.

    Related Concepts

    • It is called the “birds and bees” talk because of how all animals procreate similarly. Discussing sex in terms of the animal kingdom may make it easier for all parties.

    Language Choice

    • A child’s readiness for the conversation will guide this, but experts agree that using real words to describe body parts and acts—as opposed to euphemisms—is best.

    Safe Sex

    • Consider discussing benefits of condoms. While you may feel this communicates consent of sexual activity, if your child does engage in sex it is good for him or her to take precautions against disease and unwanted pregnancy.

    Discuss Your Values

    • Parents generally wish their children to have the same sexual values and you should lay these out for your children, such as expectations on premarital sex.
