FiOS DVRs can also be programmed over the Internet or by mobile phone.

FiOS is the subscription television service offered by Verizon in select areas where the video feed is delivered to the home through fiber-optic cables. A variety of programming packages are available with FiOS TV, and among those is the Extreme HD package.

  1. Fiber Optics

    • The fiber-optic cables used with FiOS TV and high-speed Internet create an upgrade over standard digital cable TV, as the cables deliver higher-quality video and the wider bandwidth of fiber-optics allows for more rapid transmission of both TV and Internet signals.

    Extreme HD

    • FiOS TV's Extreme HD is the middle option of the three HD packages available, which begin with the Prime HD package and lead up to the Ultimate HD, with the main difference being the number of channels included in each package.

    Channels

    • The Extreme HD package contains more than 325 channels, of which more than 65 are in HD. Included in that are the major networks and other national and regional channels available from the major cable and satellite TV providers.

    Equipment

    • FiOS Extreme HD requires the use of its HD receiver or DVR and an HDTV for viewing the high-definition channels. Also, HDMI or component video cables must be used to connect the receiver/DVR to the TV to convey the HD video and multi-channel digital audio.

    Price

    • The Extreme HD package comes with a $74.99 monthly fee, as of 2010, though that can vary by ZIP code. Premium channels including HBO and Cinemax require an additional fee, as does the receiver/DVR. TV packages can be bundled with Internet and/or telephone service for a discount compared to what each would cost separately.
