People have long identified red as a color of sexuality, anger, passion and love. Prolonged exposure to the color has been known to stimulate hunger, anger and raise blood pressure within the human body.

Red poppies have been used in many countries to represent sleep and death. They became a symbol specifically of the war dead after World War I, when poppies grew over the devastated battlefields after the conflict and covered the graves of soldiers.

The opium found in one species of poppy has been used throughout history as a potent drug. Many countries have devoted time and money to the removal of poppy fields.
Geography

Poppies are native and have been transplanted to almost every continent across the globe. They are cultivated as ornaments, foods and for the opium within the seeds of the Papaver somniferum species.
