Tests commonly look for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH and hardness in water. Ammonia and nitrite are highly toxic and nitrate may affect long-term fish health. pH measures acidity and alkalinity of the water, while hardness measures mineral content.

A recent addition to the tank or poor maintenance may cause worrisome results. Perform a large water change and re-test in a few hours. Remove any recently added decorations, and always check for decaying fish, plants and food.
