Picking your favorite variety of apples in Western Massachusetts is an activity the whole family can enjoy. There are plenty of "u-pick" places that feature not only apples but other fruits and vegetables throughout Western Mass and the rest of the United States. Does this Spark an idea?

The peak time for picking apples is Sept 1- Oct 25th. The season begins with Gala and McIntosh apples ripe for picking and ends with Suncrisp and Enterprise apples. Harvesting ends in late October.
Varieties

There are many varieties to pick from in Western Massachusetts. Some of the typical types of apples available are McIntosh, Royal Gala and Honey Crisp in early Sept. Jonagold and Cortland are available mid September. Red Delicious and Fuji are available late September.

Green Rover Farms in Willamstown, Lakeview Orchard in Lanesboro, Bear Swamp Orchard in Ashfield and Echo Hills Orchard and Winery in Monson are just a few places that have pick your own apples.
What to Wear and Bring

Dress for the late summer or early fall weather of Massachusetts. Most orchards will provide you with a basket or bag to put your apples in, but you may want to call beforehand to be sure. Wear clothes that you don't mind getting dirty. Gardening gloves are also a good choice.
Pick Your Apples

Avoid apples with holes, bruising or other defects. Scab is a common pest that can show up on Massachusetts grown apples. Be sure to wash your apples before eating or baking to clean the apples from dirt or pesticides.
